Our PROGRAM

In both instructional and discussion-based classes, we ensure students understand the challenges of the SHSAT are not theirs alone. From content review to time management and test strategies, we provide students with a broader context of the test, so they leave the class not just better at the SHSAT, but more confident with academic challenges in the short and long term.

Our SHSAT class is designed to suit the needs of the Workshop Middle School community. It includes 16 hours of instruction and is broken up into 12 80-minute workshops.

DATES & DETAILS

Mondays after school from 4 to 5:20PM, starting March 20. Class will resume in September and will run for 6 weeks in the spring and 6 weeks in the fall.

PARENT INFO SESSION

Parents are welcome to attend a free information session on Monday, March 20th at 7:15PM over ZOOM to learn more about testing and general admissions information. Register for the 45-minute info session at the Zoom link here.

Test Content

We begin with the underlying concepts in math, grammar, and reading.

Test Design

Through weekly homework assignments, we familiarize students with the question constructions from the SHSAT.

Test Strategies

In the discussion-based part of the class, we share approaches - how to respond to certain questions, or navigate the time constraints of the test - so that each student understands the challenges of these tests are manageable.

80 MINUTES OF INSTRUCTION

We believe that 80 minutes is an ideal amount of effective instructional time for 8th graders mastering the SHSAT: just the right length to keep your child engaged but not exhausted.

TIME MANAGEMENT AND TEST DAY STRATEGIES

Not only does City Smarts teach content, but we also devote time to pacing, overcoming test anxiety, and time management.

Who we are

City Smarts works with students in both one-on-one and workshop settings to ensure seamless transitions from middle school to high school, high school to college, and beyond. Our work is informed by the academic challenges students face both inside and outside the classroom. We work with students at a broad range of schools, and help students anticipate the curricula they’ll see in the years ahead. We have been working with students since 2007, some of whom are now college graduates.
