When we founded City Smarts fourteen years ago, it was with a simple goal: to provide really good one-on-one tutoring. We worked with a handful of mostly Brooklyn-based families, providing their children with academic support at each stage of their education. When 5th grade math got a little tough, we were there, and when the time came to apply to high school or college, we were there too. We eschewed claims of easier! better! faster! in favor of a decidedly old-school approach. And it worked. City Smarts kids were accepted to the city’s best public and private schools, and ultimately enrolled in the country’s best colleges, confident in their own abilities.
Today, we work with hundreds of students across the New York City area and worldwide, but we remain as committed as ever to providing holistic, highly individualized academic tutoring, test prep, and educational consulting tailored to the needs of our community.
So how is City Smarts different? It all starts with our tutors. We recognize that while tests may be standardized, learning is not. And so we hire rockstar educators and brilliant test-takers, unabashed nerds who just love to teach and proven specialists of higher learning. Each “tutor-pairing” is the result of a meticulous process. We take time to understand each student’s individual needs and pair them with the tutor who will be most effective. When questions arise–about learning obstacles, admissions processes, or upcoming tests–we provide careful guidance. And when City Smarts kids receive their report cards and diplomas, we’ve been known to swing by and celebrate.
City Smarts doesn’t tout web-based, app-driven learning or trademarked methodologies, and we don’t offer shiny score-booster guarantees either. This is by design. We owe our seventeen years in business to a relentless focus on that one simple goal–really good tutoring. We didn’t need a gimmick to go viral.
