City Smarts 12-Hour SUMMER SHSAT Clinic (2020)
Our SHSAT clinics are designed to instill 7th graders with an authentic, content-level understanding of the SHSAT. Over the course of 12 hours of distance instruction and 3 hours of video-proctored assessment testing, your 7th grader will become a confident test taker. Read below to learn what makes our program proudly different, and enroll today.
Our class format is the result of over a decade of parent and student feedback, and it is distinct from nearly anything offered by other companies. As students progress through a classroom test prep curriculum, their needs tend to diverge from one another; it is impossible–or at least very difficult–to fine-tune individual technique in a one-size-fits-all classroom format. Consequently, we view classes as a valuable component in a holistic test prep sequence. By the end of our course, students will have built a strong foundation for SHSAT testing. Armed with a detailed knowledge of their individual strengths and weaknesses, students will be prepared to pivot to pinpoint private or small-group lessons.
DISTANCE LEARNING: As a result of the coronavirus crisis, we have temporarily migrated our classes to a virtual format. We have found Zoom to be an effective platform for class-based tutoring. Once it is safe to return to a physical classroom setting, we will return to offering in-person class options.

FLEXIBLE LEARNING: REMOTE & CLASSROOM-BASED
Due to the coronavirus, all upcoming SHSAT classes will be conducted using Zoom, our preferred video-conferencing platform. Once it is safe to do so, we will offer students the opportunity to migrate their students to in-person classes at our Carroll Gardens location. Students who wish to stick with distance learning will be free to do so.
90 Minutes of Instruction
We believe that 90 minutes is the ideal amount of effective instructional time for 7th grade learners: just the right length to keep your child engaged but not exhausted.
Clinic capped at 8 students
In order to maintain individual instruction time and encourage peer-learning, we have capped our classes at 8 students. At the end of 10 weeks, our instructors will know your student’s individual learning profile and will have addressed their unique needs. While other companies pack their classes with up to 15 students, we feel that smaller classes facilitate a scholarly learning environment.
Holistic approach
Every year, our SHSAT students find that their grades in math class improve in tandem with our instruction; this is because we focus on building content knowledge rather than slick tricks. City Smarts believes that the best way to conquer the SHSAT is to actually learn the material and become confident in the test’s structure. Our instruction has a lasting impact that will serve your child in school and on subsequent standardized tests.
time management and test day strategies
Not only does City Smarts teach content, but we also devote time to pacing, overcoming test anxiety, and time management.
Diagnostics
Our course concludes with a full length mock exam, which will be proctored either at our classroom or virtually, as circumstances allow. Each student will receive a detailed test report that not only outlines in which areas he or she needs to continue improving, but also serves as a benchmark for overall progress. Because City Smarts also offers one of the most robust private SHSAT tutoring programs in the city, we guarantee that we will have guidance in place, should your child need it.
